  In my head I hear the sound of the bandstand collapsing into the sinkhole, and instead of answering Diane’s question, I turn back around and stare out the front of the golf cart. Then I look over at Graham. He’s looking back at me, wide-eyed. He presses the gas, and without another word, starts us slowly off again up the street. He reaches over and squeezes my hand. I squeeze back.

  I may need to make a few calls.
